Help! How Often Should I Eat?

Dr. Tripp's Take on How Many Meals a Day You Should be Having

There is so much information out there on this topic. Some people say 3 square meals a day. Others will say 6 small meals. Some people say you should just graze little by little. Still others tell you that the best way to consume your calories is through various bouts of intermittent fasting. How do we know who to believe?

5 Tips for Eating Real Food on a Budget

How much is a normal amount of money to spend on groceries?? Last year, Jared and I spent $5077! That’s over $420/month for 2 people. I basically had the perspective that getting groceries was cheaper than eating out, so I didn’t pay any attention to how much we were spending, I just swiped the credit card and didn’t give it a second thought. Patients always tell me that it's too expensive to eat healthy, so I'm going to try to do better in this regard!

This Year We are doing things a little bit Differently...

What My Dad Taught Me About Healthy Eating

Wayne KuhrMy dad had juvenile onset diabetes. When I was a little girl, I remember him taking a shot every morning. I thought that's what dads do; every morning they shave and they take a shot. It wasn't until later that I realized he was different than most dads.

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes when he was a young adult, and lived to be 76. When he was diagnosed in the 1940's. the projected life expectancy was 45 years. I always thought he was a poster child for diabetics, and that's why he beat the projections without the typical side effects of diabetes.

Over the past year,  I've changed my eating habits and lost weight. My dad would be proud. Although I don't have diabetes, I'm doing the same things that he did - and so are his grand-daughters. Today I remember dad's birthday by sharing my recollections of how he lived:

"Health Foods" that Aren't so Healthy: Soy

Over the weekend, I was watching the movie 2 Weeks Notice (Sandra Bullock, Hugh Grant, very cute chick flick). One of the things I noticed in this movie was how often the Characters referenced Soy as being healthy. They put soy in their cake, soy ice cream, had soy milk, etc. While I do believe the extreme Soy fad is past, there are still quite a few people out there who likely think of it as a healthy alternative, and I don’t agree.

Back in my calorie counting days (mostly my college years), I would often sub out a burger for a “boca burger” made with soy. In my mind this was “healthier” because it was a couple hundred calories less. Little did I know that there is much more to life than calories. (like how your body actually handles and processes the nutrients in food).

Things you might not know about Soy

4 Week Update

Hey Everyone! It's officially been 4 weeks (of 7) of our "Paleo Challenge"

For those of you who are just joining in, in a nutshell, this means that my boyfriend Jared and I are just eating Meats, veggies, some fruits, and some nuts! We are skipping pretty much all processed foods including breads, alcohol, pastas, pop, chips, crackers, cookies, cakes, processed sauces,  ice cream, milk, cheese (me moreso than Jared with the cheese) etc.

Guess how much weight Jared had lost??!

What do You Eat in a Typical Day?

I've have aIII'veII have had a lot of people ask me lately, what do you actually eat in a day? How do you not eat bread, pasta, rice, processed foods, etc? So I figured I'd take pictures of everything I ate today to show you all how easy it can be. Yes, today, I was that girl who takes pictures of all of her food. Actually since I started this blog, I've been that girl a lot. Oh well.

Here is Everything I ate today....

I Think I have a Gluten or Dairy Intolerance- How to Know if You Might Too!

We are officially on day 21 of 49 of the paleo challenge. 3 weeks of only eating meats, veggies, spices, some fruit, and cutting out all grains, dairy, and processed food. Before I began this challenge, I was probably eating this way about 80% of the time. While inherently I know that eating these “real” foods is better, and healthy for me, this is the first time in my life that I have tried as hard as I can to be as close to perfect as possible with my clean eating. I have been absolutely astounded with the difference that extra little bit has made- so much to the fact that I think I actually have food intolerances. Let me tell you why I think so…

Are you Afraid of Fats?

What is this picture all about you wonder? This is a group of ants that were given the choice between butter and margarine. You can clearly see that most of the ants had enough sense to choose the “real food” choice of butter. The select few that did not make this decision did not live to tell about it! I think we should follow the ants lead and learn from them to stick with the butter- the real food!  So, the question of the day…

Are you afraid of fat?

Fat is one of the very important macronutrients that we need to consume (along with carbohydrates and protein). Many people believe that if they eat fat, the will get fat, but this is not the case at all. There are some fats that are better than others, and some fats better for cooking with while others are better not heated.  In this next post, I’m going to try to touch on all of these topics and other frequently asked fat questions!

All about Sugar

Alright guys, the time is finally here. I know I keep saying I’ll talk more about sugar later, and more about good fats later. Well it’s later! For the next 3 days, I’m going to do a 3 part series on the 3 main macronutrients (sugar aka carbohydrates, fat, and protein)! Get Excited! Don’t worry, I am doing to try to keep it as simple as possible.

First of all, I must tell you all that the picture I am using today is straight from a blog called Mark's Daily Apple. This blog is an awesome resource for modern day living like a caveman.

So many of you might be starting to think I am against all sugar/carbs. This is not the case. I think that sugar/carbs are a very important part of our diet and are a great way for our bodies to get quick energy. I do however feel that there are better sources and worse sources. I also strongly believe that the Standard American Diet (SAD) will result in the consumption of altogether too much sugar.

What sorts of things are high in carbohydrates?

Wait, Why Isn't Corn a Vegetable? Your questions Answered

First of all, I know this picture would have fit in better yesterday, but I had to show you that I could actually do the handstand! So here it is. Sorry about the shirt not staying tucked in. Oh and on another note, guess who’s 3 for 3 in making it to the gym! That’s right, this girl! Also, last I checked with Jared, his feet are still bothering him at work, but starting to get some mild improvement.

Today I was going to talk about meal planning, but I’m going to put that off to answer your questions:

1. Wait a second, I thought corn, beans, and rice are natural, why aren’t you eating those?

2. I don’t understand the difference between paleo, primal, anti-inflammatory, atkins, etc. What type of diet should I be eating, and what’s this difference between them?
